Skylights and roof windows are one of the hardest windows to cover. They sit at an angle, they are often high up, and standard blinds will simply sag or fall. Here is what you need to know.
Why skylights make rooms uncomfortable
- Heat: sun comes straight through the glass for most of the day in summer.
- Glare: bright overhead light is hard on screens and eyes.
- Cold: in winter, warmth escapes through the glass.
- Early mornings: bedrooms with skylights get light at sunrise.
Which blind works best?
For most skylights we recommend a honeycomb skylight blind that runs in side guides inside the frame. The guides hold the blind flat at any angle, and the honeycomb cells help insulate. Many can open from the top or the bottom, so you can let some light in and still cut the glare.
For high skylights, a motorised option makes them easy to use.
A real job: before and after
These two skylights let in heat and glare all day. We fitted honeycomb skylight blinds that sit neatly inside the frame.

Measuring a skylight
Skylight blinds must fit the frame exactly. Brands like Velux have a model code on a label inside the frame, which helps, but we always measure on site in Auckland to be sure. In Tauranga, send us your sizes and a photo of the label for a rough quote, and we measure precisely once your deposit is paid.
Quick checklist
- Take a photo of the skylight and any label on the frame.
- Note roughly how high it is and whether you can reach it.
- Decide if you want blockout (bedrooms) or light-filtering (living areas).
- Think about motorised control for high skylights.
